A frequent question among faith formation colleagues from liturgical traditions goes something like this:

Does anyone have a liturgy for _____?

Often, the occasion is a transition in leadership of some kind. So we wanted to share this contribution from one of our colleagues, who recently had reason to write such a liturgy to honor a faith formation ministry transition.

Feel free to excerpt and adapt it for your setting. Notice that it runs the faith formation gamut of church school, youth group, and adult forum leadership.

A Celebration of New Leadership

The Celebrant begins:

Dear People of God, I present those to you who have performed special service as members of this community.  They have served diligently as leaders of Christian Formation in Church School, Youth Group, and Adult Forum, and they are now shifting to new ministries.  I also present to you, those who will now lead Church School, Youth Group, and Adult Forum.  I ask your prayers as they and continue in this new service.

The outgoing Church School Leader prays:

O God, you have bound our Church School together as teachers and children.  We do this to know you and to know how we are part of your story.  I give you humble and hearty thanks for the ministry I have shared these four years.

The incoming Church School Leader prays:

Jesus said, “Whoever serves me must follow me: and where I am, my servant will also be.  My Father will honor the one who serves me.

The outgoing Youth Group Leader prays:

O God, you have enlivened your Church through the ministry of youth.  We praise you for the ministries exercised by and for youth in this parish and pray that you will continue to have us reap the fruits of the Spirit.

The incoming Youth Group Leader prays:

Jesus Christ, invincible light of the world, that you for all whose vision has enlightened us and brought us near to you.  Keep us imaginative, expectant, and willing to learn, so that we may come ever closer to the light.

The outgoing Adult Forum Leader prays:

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus taught us that what we do for the least of our sisters and brothers we do also for him, give us the will to be the servant of others as he was the servant of all, and bless those who seek a deeper and richer knowledge and love of you.

The incoming Adult Forum Leader prays:

O Eternal God, bless our Adult Forum, that it may be a lively center for sound learning, new discovery, and the pursuit of your will; and grant that those who teach and those who learn may find you to be a source of truth; through Jesus Christ our LORD.

The Congregation Prays:

Almighty God, by whose grace alone we are accepted and called to your service: strengthen us by your Holy Spirit and make us worthy of our calling. And, Lord defend these your servants with your heavenly grace and daily increase in them your Holy Spirit until they come to your everlasting Kingdom.

All Respond:
