Overview

SonTreasure Island is based on 1 Corinthians 13, with overtones of Gilligan’s Island. The week will be spent discovering the rich treasure of God’s love and Jesus’s life, surrounded by a tropical beach theme. The five daily points are solid ones: God’s love is giving; God’s love is kind; God’s love is caring; God’s love is forgiving; and God’s love is forever.

The stories used are familiar ones and told in an developmentally appropriate way. Gospel Light does a good job of making sure the messages of God’s love and saving grace are evident in all their lessons without being overbearing.

Strengths

  • This is truly the reproducible VBS! The Director’s Manual has a CD that has everything and anything that you could think of for your VBS: training articles, forms, checklists, newsletters, etc. And some of them are modifiable. You can also purchase the Reproducible Power Pack that has all the leader resources and guides to be printed ($99.99). The music is reproducible also.
  • The craft book is a treasure trove. It includes forty-six crafts for the week that you can pick and choose from, depending on age and theme.
  • You can do this VBS either as a rotation model or a classroom model. The games and bible story centers are separated into three age groups: primary, middler, and preteen. Some of the centers are combined, such as opening and closing, crafts, and snacks.
  • Decorating will be easy—beach theme with sand and water!
  • The program does have a nighttime VBS guide included in the deluxe kit.
  • Suggestions offer more than one snack/food item for each day.

Weaknesses

  • The selection of music is small: only six songs with two additional songs for preschoolers.
  • There are a lot of materials to go through on the discs, but they are categorized in folders, which helps somewhat.
  • Snacks were a bit on the sugary side, but options were available.
